The Gospel According to Adam: The Holy Art of Editing
Written by Adam Parrish, Directed by Mick Lauer
Stories have been the backbone of social institutions since the dawn of mankind, and it continues to be now and (as expected) for all time. The word “story” somewhat implies a fictional nature, however this is not true. History is comprised of stories, fantasy lives immortal in stories, and the Bible was built upon age old stories scribbled down by scribes.
The tales of the Bible live and breathe within all of us. Most of us can effortlessly recognize the brothers Cain and Abel, Noah and his Ark, and the very naked Adam and Eve. Perhaps it is because we live in a predominantly Christian country, or perhaps it is because these Biblical tales have been the inspiration for so many of the stories told today. The Gospel According to Adam is very much about the nature of stories…and their “true” origins. Challenging us (positively or negatively) to further investigate what we once thought was fact.
While the later tales of Christopher Columbus painted him in a much less flattering light, we continue to celebrate the man as a true hero. Likewise, while scholars have determined that Joseph’s coat was not, in fact, many colored, Andrew Lloyd Webber would likely not revise his musical to be titled Joseph and the Robe of Long Sleeves. So what’s the point of digging further into stories so deeply rooted in our consciousness? Well, to learn a few things, to spark debate, to inspire us to question the tale’s tellers, or just to make us laugh.
The Gospel According to Adam performed at the Black Box Theater at 440 Studios in the Winter of 2006. The show recieved a huge acclaim from near sold out perfomances every night. The show will be remounted in tandem with Pains of Youth this May.
