Julius Caesar: A New Rome has Risen in the East
Written by William Shakespeare, Directed by Charles Wilson
Our debut production--Julius Caesar set in the modern day Middle East--represented the culmination of more than a year's worth of work and research. The choice to set the play in that sensitive context was an attempt to recreate the controversial experience similar to that of when the play was first performed in 1599 London.
The result was met with such universal praise and great success that it inspired our group to become a full-blown theatre company and set the standard we strive hard to improve upon with each new play.
The plays themes of justice, ambition, honor, fate, loyalty, etc. are so universal and so timeless that they can be placed in almost any political context and maintain validity. The ongoing struggles [and impending war] in the Middle East made it the most obvious and most relevant choice.
Julius Caesar was produced at the Theater For the New City in the winter of 2003. While there was no publicity, the show was considered a great success! Several schools attended and particpated in talk-backs with the cast, and the company was given such an excited audience response, there was little choice but to drive forward and continue producing work as demanded.
